How to Layer a Shirtdress

Location: San Diego, CA

Ever wanted to wear a shirt dress (or even just a more casual version of a button up shirt) but didn't want to look like you just rolled out of bed? Yeah same. Don't get me wrong - the whole pajama top thing is cute and all but for those of us who want to look a little more put together, there are things you can do/add to elevate the look.

For this look, I layered a slightly oversized lightweight sweater over this Madewell shirtdress and added a black duster and knee socks. I made sure the collar of the dress was peeping out over the neckline of the sweater. I recommend wearing a slightly oversized sweater to avoid any bunching of the dress under the sweater (not today, wardrobe malfunctions).

I love the way these pieces look paired together. Yeah, it's a lot of black. But I think the shirtdress breaks it up in all the right places. You can also go without the duster as seen below:

Another layering option is to skip the sweater altogether and just rock the dress and duster. I recommend adding an accessory to give it a little something extra. I just popped these sunglasses  into the neckline of the dress but you could just as easily add a dainty necklace or belt the dress under the duster.

So there you have it. All the comfort and adorableness of a shirtdress PLUS a chic edge. I think it's a win-win.
